Natural Resource Projects

One of the goals of the Friends of Nolin Lake group is to "participate in and support natural resource projects". Take a moment to review each of our special projects and see how we are working with this goal. If any of these programs interest you, please contact us at info@friendsofnolinlake.org and let us know how you could and would like to help with our nature based projects.

Water Monitoring

As we start to see the light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel, we hope that everyone is excited to get out on the lake and get involved in helping to preserve our beautiful lake.

As a non-profit dedicated to preserving water quality in Nolin Lake, FONL is looking for members who want to help make a difference on that front! FONL plans to start participating in the Kentucky Division of Water's Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program this year (VLMP). This is a DOW funded citizen science program that trains volunteers to monitor water quality in lakes around the Commonwealth. FONL and DOW are arranging a training in June or July of 2021 at an outdoor location. DOW will provide training and all equipment except a smartphone to report the data on (as with everything these days, there is an app for water sampling).

If you are interested in learning more about the water in Nolin Lake, and contributing to efforts to preserve water quality across the Commonwealth, email Nick Lawhon at nick.lawhon58@gmail.com for more information or to sign up!

Fish Habitat Improvement

This project, a collaboration between the US Army Corps of Engineers, KY Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources, and Friends of Nolin Lake, aims to improve aquatic habitat for sport fish by stabilizing eroded shorelines and deploying submerged fish habitat structures adjacent to the restoration sites. Further, the project will create 2 new bank fishing sites.

Project start date is targeted to be June 2019 with completion depending on weather and winter water level.

WE WILL NEED VOLUNTEERS TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT ON TIME AND AT COST!

If you think you and/or your organization would like to help with this important project, contact us at info@friendsofnolinlake.org or 270-272-8003 and let us know. We'll be happy to keep you updated on important progress milestones.
